Jan. Term 2019: 400 Years of Inequality

Jan Term 2019: 400 Years of Inequality

2019 will be the 400th Anniversary of the arrival of the first Africans to be sold into bondage in North America in 1619 at Jamestown.  The UofO is part of the 400 Years of Inequality coalition calling on families, organizations, neighborhoods and cities to observe the anniversary by telling their own stories of oppression and resistance. Join us as we ground this project in our local stories, and explore how to organize a place-based observance.

Every Jan Term at UofO we offer a seminar, a field trip, and a volunteer activity. This year our seminar is led by Mindy Fullilove and colleagues from the 400 Years of Inequality project. We are excited to offer a  printmaking workshop with local artist Krystle Lemonias. To earn your 2019 Jan Term Urbanism Certificate, participate in our seminar, art class, field trip, and volunteer.

Field Trip to Charles White: A Retrospective

“Art must be an integral part of the struggle,” Charles White insisted. “It can’t simply mirror what’s taking place. … It must ally itself with the forces of liberation.”

Join UofO for a field trip to the MOMA to see a retrospective of the work of Charles White, renowned painter, printmaker and educator.  White’s work featured powerful images of African Americans. Throughout his career as a socially committed artist he was part of vibrant creative and activist communities.  We will meet in the museum lobby. UofO can provide free or $5 tickets. If you want to arrange group travel from NJ email universityoforange@gmail.com

Seminar: 400 Years of Inequality & Planning Your Own Place-Based Observance for Fall 2019

The 400 Years of Inequality coalition calls on families, organizations, neighborhoods and cities to host place-based observances across the nation in 2019. Every community has something to contribute. The observance you plan will reflect your local story and your values. An observance can be anything: a performance, an exhibit, a tree planting, a citywide potluck, a concert. Join us to learn more about the 400 Years of Inequality initiative and get tools for planning or participating in your own place based observance.

Lets Print Orange: A Printmaking Workshop with Krystle Lemonias

Let’s share visual narratives of our city, Orange. We will create relief prints on paper or fabric showcasing buildings and structures in our neighborhood that we each find integral to our community in two, two hour workshops. Together we will tell our individual stories about Orange and build solidarity in the growth of our neighborhood with relief printing.

The art of relief printing surfaced in Europe during the 15 Century when the process of printmaking was improved from the East. In the West the first woodcuts on paper in quantity to be circulated were playing cards. Soon after the distribution of information became more accessible with the Gutenberg printing press.
